Aspects

Applying Aspect
An aspect still forming — faster planet is moving toward exactitude. Generally considered stronger than separating aspects.
Aspect Orb
The allowed slack in degrees around an exact aspect. Tighter orb = stronger expression.
Aspect Pattern
A named configuration of three or more planets in aspect to each other (T-square, Grand Trine, Yod, etc.).
Challenging Aspect
Squares, oppositions, and quincunxes — aspects that create friction and force growth. Harder, but richer in lessons.
Conjunction
A 0° aspect — two planets at the same degree. Energies blend and act as one. Nature depends on the planets involved.
Exact Aspect
An aspect within less than 1° of its ideal angle. The clearest, most undiluted version of that connection.
Grand Cross
Four planets forming two oppositions squared to each other. Intense pressure from multiple directions, forcing integration.
Grand Trine
Three planets forming an equilateral triangle — all in the same element. A reservoir of natural talent.
Harmonious Aspect
Trines and sextiles — aspects that let planetary energies flow smoothly together. Gifts and ease.
Major Aspect
The five Ptolemaic aspects: conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition. The strongest and most studied.
Minor Aspect
Smaller-orb aspects like semisextile, semisquare, sesquiquadrate, quintile. Subtler but meaningful.
Opposition
A 180° aspect. Planets face each other across the chart — polarization and projection; integration is the work.
Orb
The allowed degree of deviation from an exact aspect. A tighter orb = a stronger aspect.
Quincunx
A 150° aspect (also called inconjunct). Planets in signs with nothing in common — requires ongoing adjustment.
Semisextile
A 30° aspect. Mildly adjustive — planets in adjacent signs, subtly incompatible in style.
Semisquare
A 45° aspect. A minor tension aspect — irritation that pushes action.
Separating Aspect
An aspect past exactitude — the faster planet has moved beyond the exact angle. Weaker effect than an applying aspect.
Sesquiquadrate
A 135° aspect. A minor tension aspect — nagging friction that demands adjustment.
Sextile
A 60° aspect. A flowing, opportunity-based connection — requires conscious use to bear fruit.
Square
A 90° aspect. A tense, friction-based connection — drives growth through challenge.
Trine
A 120° aspect. A harmonious flow between planets in the same element — gifts, ease, natural talent.
T-Square
A configuration: two planets in opposition, both square a third. A powerful driver of action through tension.
Yod
Two planets sextile each other, both quincunx a third — the 'Finger of God'. Points to a specific life mission.

Astrology

Ascendant
The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. Your outer persona, first impressions, and physical appearance.
Chart Balance
The overall distribution of elements, modalities, and hemispheres — how 'centred' or lopsided your chart is.
Chart Ruler
The planet that rules the sign on the Ascendant. Its placement and condition shape how you show up in the world.
Cusp
The boundary between two houses (or two signs). A planet near a cusp can carry the flavor of both.
Day Chart
A chart where the Sun is above the horizon at birth. In sect, the Sun and Jupiter lead.
Descendant
The point opposite the Ascendant — the cusp of the 7th house. What you seek in partners.
Detriment
The sign opposite a planet's domicile. The planet acts under strain and against its grain.
Dignity
A planet's comfort level in a sign. Rulership, exaltation, detriment, and fall describe how strong or weak it acts.
Dispositor
The ruler of the sign a planet is in. Following a chain of dispositors reveals the chart's underlying hierarchy.
Domicile
The sign(s) a planet rules. A planet in its domicile acts at full strength and in its natural style.
Dominant Planet
The planet with the most weight in a chart — rulership, placement, aspects combined. Colours the whole personality.
Ecliptic
The apparent yearly path of the Sun through the sky. The zodiac is measured along it.
Ego
Your conscious sense of self. In astrology, the domain of the Sun.
Emphasis
Where the chart is concentrated — a sign, house, or element that holds disproportionate weight.
Equal Houses
House system that starts at the Ascendant and makes every house exactly 30°. The MC floats inside its house.
Exaltation
A sign where a planet acts with special grace. E.g., Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Venus in Pisces.
Fall
The sign opposite a planet's exaltation. The planet acts weakened or compromised.
Fated Connection
A contact in a chart or synastry that feels destined — often involves lunar nodes, Pluto, or Vertex.
Hemisphere Emphasis
The half of the chart where most planets cluster — east/west or north/south. Hints at orientation toward self or others, inner or outer life.
Imum Coeli
The lowest point of the chart — the cusp of the 4th house. Your roots, private life, emotional foundation.
Karma
The idea that actions in past lives shape this life. In astrology, seen in Saturn, the lunar nodes, and the 12th house.
Koch
A time-based house system similar to Placidus but using a different projection. Popular in German-speaking astrology.
Lunar Phase
The Sun–Moon relationship at birth — new, crescent, first quarter, etc. Describes the cyclic mood of your life.
Mercury Retrograde
When Mercury appears to move backward — classically a period to review, revise, and reconnect, not to launch.
Midheaven
The highest point of the ecliptic at your birth — the cusp of the 10th house. Your career, reputation, public image.
Moon Sign
The zodiac sign the Moon was in at birth. Rules your inner emotional life and subconscious needs.
Natal Chart
A map of the sky at the exact moment of your birth. The foundation of personal astrology.
Night Chart
A chart where the Sun is below the horizon at birth. In sect, the Moon and Venus lead.
Orb of Influence
The range, in degrees, within which a planet still exerts its aspect. Outside the orb, the connection becomes negligible.
Partnership
Any close one-to-one bond — marriage, business, best friendship. Ruled by Venus and the 7th house.
Part of Fortune
A calculated Arabic Part — Ascendant + Moon − Sun (for day births). Points to material well-being and natural flow.
Placidus
The most widely used house system in modern Western astrology. Divides the houses by time of diurnal motion.
Planetary Ruler
The planet that governs a given sign or house. Its condition is read as the condition of what it rules.
Planet in House
A planet placed in a particular house. The house shows the life area where the planet's energy plays out.
Planet in Sign
A planet placed in a particular zodiac sign. The sign colours how the planet's energy is expressed.
Progression
A symbolic technique that advances the natal chart to show inner development over time. Most common: secondary progressions (1 day = 1 year).
Retrograde
A planet appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth's perspective. Its themes turn inward and are re-examined.
Rising Sign
Same as Ascendant — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth. Shapes your outer persona.
Sphere of Life
An area of experience ruled by a particular house — career, relationships, money, home, and so on.
Spirituality
The realm of meaning, transcendence, and connection to something larger. Ruled by Neptune, Pisces, and the 12th house.
Stellium
Three or more planets clustered in the same sign or house. A major focus in the chart.
Subconscious
The hidden, instinctive layer of the psyche. In astrology, shown mostly by the Moon, 12th house, and Neptune.
Sun Sign
The zodiac sign the Sun was in at birth. The most familiar piece of a chart — but just one layer.
Transformation
Deep, irreversible change — typically the domain of Pluto, the 8th house, and Scorpio.
Transit
The current position of a planet in the sky and its relationship to your natal chart. The basis of predictive astrology.
Vertex
A calculated point in the western hemisphere — often tied to fated encounters and meaningful external events.
Whole Sign Houses
An ancient house system where each sign = one house. The sign containing the Ascendant is the entire 1st house.
Zodiac
The 12-sign circle of the ecliptic, each sign 30° wide. The backdrop against which planetary positions are read.

What happens when another person's planets land in your 7th house of partnership — activates the relationship theme.
Challenging Dynamic

Expression Number

Life Path Number

Master Number

Personal Year

Polarity

Angular Houses
The 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th houses. Action-initiating houses — strongest for planets placed there.
Cadent Houses
The 3rd, 6th, 9th, and 12th houses. Houses of learning and adaptation — process experience.
Eighth House
The House of Transformation. Rules shared resources, intimacy, death, rebirth, the occult.
Eleventh House
The House of Community. Rules friendships, groups, hopes and wishes, and long-term visions.
Fifth House
The House of Creativity and Joy. Rules romance, children, play, hobbies, and creative self-expression.
First House

Fourth House

House Area

House Cusp
The exact starting degree of a house. Planets near a cusp can act in both adjacent houses.
Intercepted Sign
A zodiac sign fully contained within a single house, not touching either cusp. Planets here may feel 'trapped'.
Ninth House
The House of Higher Learning. Rules long journeys, foreign cultures, philosophy, religion, publishing.
Second House
The House of Values. Rules money, possessions, self-worth, and what you find valuable.
Seventh House
The House of Partnership. Rules marriage, close partnerships, and open enemies.
Sixth House

Succedent Houses
